About
Judith Rugg's recent paintings focus on the accidental aesthetic of urban space – the reflected light and the formal order and disorder of surface – and how this can be explored through painterly approaches. She is interested in how painting can acquire a meditative quality, like music, where through repetition, minor shifts of key or elements going in and out of phase, the surface can develop a friction or a fugitive quality. The narrative of spatial contexts, the accumulations of space as a locus for hope and loss, the transience of the individual and the paradox of innocence and deliberation have been continual themes in her work over the last 5 years.
